Buprenorphine Waiver Course

Posted over 6 years ago by Michael Vreeland

Time is quickly passing for 2017. And so is the opportunity to take advantage of the buprenorphine waiver course, which is scheduled to expire December 31st of this year.

In July 2016, former President Obama signed into law the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), which allows qualified NPs and PAs to become waivered prescribers to buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD). AANP has provided the funding for this training through the year 2017. The course is FREE! However, this grant will expire December 31st of this year.

The course is accessed through the AANP CE Center. This course takes 24 hours to complete. Once completed, you receive 24 AANP contact hours and 18 of those hours, can go toward pharmacology credit. The training is provided through the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). You need to create a login with them and access the actual training under "Education" and "e-learning center".

The training course has great information regarding opioid dependency and why buprenorphine is a good alternative to treating OUD. Once the course is completed, you can then obtain a "waiver". You also receive a new DEA number with a "X" replaced by your first letter, allowing you to prescribe buprenorphine specific for OUD. For example, AB1234567 will be changed to XB1234567.

It's a little bit of a process, but it's worth it. Your confidence will also build regarding OUD. You will be a great resource for your patients, colleagues and legislatures. Take advantage of this grant, while it is still in place!

Sincerely,

Mike Vreeland, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC

UNP President
