Position Description

Are you an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a passion for helping children with special health care needs? Does that passion include being certain that all children are entitled to the best care, whether they are in metro areas or rural locations? Well this Pediatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse position with the Utah Department of Health may be just what you are looking for.

As a Pediatric APRN you will evaluate children for a variety of developmental concerns along the Wasatch Front and in rural sites. Formal Assessments will include developmental delay, disability, learning disorders, behavior problems, anxiety disorders, depression, and ADHD and associated conditions. Additionally, you would be aware of problems with sleep, feeding, or toileting. You will be using established and recognized testing protocols. After the evaluation, you will document all encounters in the Division's electronic medical record. The system will capture the evaluation techniques and methods, results of interviews with patients and families, pertinent diagnosis, referrals to outside agencies, and appropriate billing submission. Additionally, you will establish open communication as needed with families to answer questions and ensure the families understand the evaluation, diagnosis, and next steps. This position will function as part of a multi-disciplinary team and will regularly counsel with and consult with other members of the team on patients team members have in common. This position will require in-state travel. You will work out of the Health Clinics of Utah sites in Salt Lake City two to three days per week with one day in Ogden and one day in Provo offices as well.  In addition to this standard schedule, there will be a responsibility to provide evaluative and diagnostic services in rural clinics currently located in Blanding, Moab, Price, Richfield, and Vernal. This will be approximately 22-24 traveling clinics per year spread though those locations.

In order to be considered for this position you must hold current licensure in good standing as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.  A valid driver license is also required.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Sensitivity working with children with special health care needs and their families.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with internal and external clients
  • An ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience as a pediatric APRN working with children with special health care needs, including children with or at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders and behavior issues
  • Experience prescribing and managing Schedule II medications and those used for behavior control
  • Current prescriptive authority

  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills for both verbal and written communication

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc..
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Occasional in state, out of state, overnight and weekend travel may be required. 
  • As a condition of employment, this position requires compliance with the Utah Department of Health Employee Immunization policy. Applicants may request a copy of the policy if called for an interview.
  • This position is a career service exempt (schedule TL) that may convert to career service (schedule B) in the future.
  • Be aware that salary ranges specified reflect a minimum starting and top of range dollar amount. Actual rate per hour will be determined by evaluation of qualifications and skills of the individual and the availability of monies through budget and grants or by following DHRM rule.
