UNP Community Schlorships Recipient 2011
This past summer I traveled to the Andes Mountains of Peru, joining a medical team to provide free medical services to the native women. The women of this region are so special. They stand proud, many in their traditional garb bright colors and unusual hats, woven blankets with precious doe-eyed babies carried across their backs. These women would line up for hours and await the medical care provided by American medical missionaries.
The medical services we provided on this mission were aimed to improve the health and quality of life of Peruvian women through the primary and secondary prevention of female genital tract cancers. The International Cervical Cancer Association (INCCA) is a not-profit organization of professional volunteers dedicated to providing medical services and education to the women of poverty. I joined physicians and medical students and traveled to remote villages in Peru to provide health care services.
I was the recipient of the UNP 2011 community scholarship. This money was used to purchase equipment that was much needed by the clinic. My hope is to have other NP’s know what we can offer to communities worldwide and consider medical missions to aid underserved population of men, women and children. As our awareness of a wider world and other traditions expands, so will our capacity for compassion and love. As nurse practitioner missionaries experience working in a new and different environment we learn up close and personal how others live and how we can improve their lives immeasurable with a small act of kindness.
Thank You UNP for your generous scholarship
